Do you celebrate Día de los Muertos?
Portland Parks & Recreation partnered with City employee resource group, Latinx PDX, to create and plant these special garden beds in the SE corner of Mt. Scott Park.
Each year we plant marigolds and other vibrant flowers (this year we installed 250 plants), to honor the culturally significant Latiné observance of Día de Muertos - an annual celebration of loved ones who have passed on, rooted in pre-colonial Indigenous cultures of Mexico.
We invite the community to join us in helping this space bloom year after year. We need regular tending help to deadhead older flowers so new ones can grow and flourish throughout the summer.
Later in the summer, we will also host 1-2 community harvesting opportunities.
Open to all skills and abilities, no experience is required to participate.

About the Park
Cempasúchil (tagetes erecta), also known as the Mexican marigold, flor de muerto, and cempaxochitl, is an annual flower native to Mexico and Central America. The inclusion of the flower in Día de los Muertos ceremonies is pre-colonial. The name, "cempasúchil" is derived from the Nahuatl word, "cempohualxochitl," meaning "twenty flower".

Site Accessibility
There is an accessible restroom onsite including gender neutral restrooms inside the community center (available during open hours). There are paved pathways adjacent to the garden beds, so some plants will be accessible from the pathways.
There are some benches throughout the park, and some areas of the garden beds are shaded or partially shaded. Some areas may have open sun exposure.

Please bring a reusable water bottle if you have one, and any snacks you may need. Wear sturdy close-toed shoes and layers to dress for the weather.
Work looks and feels different for every body. We encourage volunteers to go at their own pace and take breaks to rest.
Keep yourself and your community safe and healthy - please stay home if you are sick. There will always be more opportunities to volunteer with us!
