Volunteer Role
We are seeking volunteers to assist with the Royal Rosarian's Milk Carton Boat Race.
Volunteers will set up pop up canopies, help unload cars, help with litter patrol, empty trash cans as needed, cheer on racers and clean it all up at the end.
Volunteers should expect to be on their feet all day (plenty of rest periods offered) and lift light loads repetitively (litter). During setup/strike expect some lifts up to 20 lbs. There is lots of help available to help with heavier lifts.
Schedule
Arrive 7AM - meet Steve Pixley at the maintenance shed on SE 22nd, just south of SE Rex. Approximate address is 7700 SE 22nd Ave.
You can sign up for one or both shifts, working either from 7am to 3:30pm (both shifts), 7am to 12pm, or 11am to 3:30pm.
What to Wear and Bring, Qualifications
Dress code is casual, comfortable for a family event. Full foot covering shoes. Sunscreen or rain gear depends on the weather.
Age 14+ works, so long as parents are okay with them working in crowds. We'll pair them up so never alone. Water, rest area are always on hand and there will be snacks, lunch and other beverages for all. Plus, it is a really friendly event. Participants love us.
About the Milk Carton Boat Race
The Milk Carton Boat Race started in 1973 to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Rose Festival. This was to be an event completely run by the Junior Court and have only children's entries. When the Junior Court ended, some rules were changed and adults became more involved. The Dairy Council of Oregon was the presenting sponsor of this event from 1973 to 2014. The Rose Festival Foundation turned to the Royal Rosarians to put on the Milk Carton Boat Race in 2016. Under the leadership of Dame Pat Maberry, the event once again came to life and, except for the COVID years, continues to be a favorite summer event for many in the community.
