Join PP&R horticulture staff to help keep up the natural garden at Columbia Park.

Created in 2020, the Columbia Nature Patch is a half-acre woodland shade garden with a high diversity of native plants that support insects and wildlife. 

Work parties - weeding, mulching, pruning - are held (usually) every third Friday of the month to keep this beautiful garden healthy. 

This natural-themed garden is one of many offerings at Columbia Park. The nature patch is located at the south edge of the park next to the cottage off of N Lombard Street.

Project Description:

Join Portland Parks & Recreation to steward Forest Park by removing invasively growing, non-native species, including English ivy, and Armenian blackberry and encouraging a diversity of native plants. By removing noxious weeds, encouraging the regeneration of native plants and planting a diversity of native plant species we help to enhance wildlife habitat and reduce erosion and water runoff. This is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature!

Please bring your own water bottle, wear closed toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Instructions, tools, and gloves will be provided. For the safety of staff and other volunteers, please stay home if you are feeling sick.

Parking and public transit:  Street parking is available on NW Aspen and the lower part of Belgrave Ave but there is limited space to turn around on Belgrave. Please only park on the north side the Belgrave to allow plenty of space for other vehicles to pass through.

Join the Tuesday Pittock Gardens volunteer crew! Every Tuesday, rain or shine, volunteers gather in the garden at Pittock Mansion to care for the plants.  We welcome gardeners of all experience levels to join, you’ll get to work with Portland Parks & Recreation’s skilled horticulturists and OSU Master Gardeners, who have years of experience. Volunteering is a great way to learn and improve your gardening skills.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who can commit to volunteering on a regular basis, rather than as a one-time event. 

We meet at 9:00 am and end at 11:30 am.

Join PP&R for a family-friendly spring stewardship event to help remove invasive ivy and dig out blackberry roots from a beloved neighborhood park in SE Portland! 

Volunteers will learn how to properly remove ivy and blackberry through manual removal. This area will be replanted with native plants when all the ivy has been removed and the soil has been rebuilt.

This natural-themed garden is one of many offerings at Irving Park. The nature patch is spread all around the west half of the park - you can't miss this gorgeous garden. It features numerous stormwater facilities, woodland shade beds, sunny native wildflower beds, and (our favorite) the stumpery.

About the Park

Luuwit (pronounced loo-wit, is the Cowlitz name for Mt. St. Helens) View Park is a beautiful greenspace in NE Portland with many amenities for park visitors.

Bees are frequent visitors to this park! They are often found buzzing around spring and summer flowers and in the grass. Bees are important beneficial pollinators.

Project details
Join Portland Parks & Recreation and Friends of Terwilliger to enhance habitat in the Terwilliger Parkway wildlands. Together we will remove noxious weeds, including English ivy, clematis and Himalayan/Armenian blackberry. We will also plant native plants at select winter events. By removing invasively growing, non-native plant species and planting a diversity of native plants, we support wildlife habitat and prevent erosion and water runoff.

Join Portland Parks & Recreation and The Portland Monarchs for a morning in the butterfly habitat at the viewpoint at Pittock Mansion.

This butterfly garden is a sanctuary that plays a critical role in providing a habitat for endangered Monarch Butterflies and other pollinators. The loss of habitats due to human activities is one of the leading causes of the drastic decline in the Monarch Butterfly. This garden is designed primarily with native plants, which includes Milkweed, the only plant that Monarch caterpillars can eat. Creating new habitats is one of the best ways to help the Monarchs recover.

The path to the viewpoint is paved, mostly flat with a slight decline, and free of holes. To access the garden, volunteers need to be able to step down about 4 to 6 inches and step up to leave the garden. Celebrate Earth Day by bee-ing a pal to pollinators! Join us for a family-friendly community planting day at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Park!

We will be working together to install the garden beds around the sports court with native and pollinator-friendly plants. These plants will bloom, bringing new flowers, birds, butterflies, and bees to the park.

Activities will be suitable for youth and adults. 

This is a great opportunity to learn more about gardening, native plants, and to connect with your neighbors and community. Open to all skills, paces, and abilities, no experience is required to participate.

¡Celebre el Día de la Tierra siendo un abeja-migo de los polinizadores! ¡Participe con PP&R y Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School en un día para plantar en comunidad, apto para toda la familia, en el parque de Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School!

Trabajaremos juntos para restaurar los canteros que rodean las pistas deportivas con la plantación de especies nativas y amigables con los polinizadores. ¡Estas plantas nuevas y las flores que traerán ayudarán a incrementar la biodiversidad y crearán un hábitat más amigable para las aves, las mariposas y las abejas en el parque!

Join PP&R for volunteer events at Hazeltine Park to help with invasive plant removal, weeding, pruning, and mulching.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about gardening and native plants, and to connect with your neighbors and community. Plant care activities may vary monthly.

About the Park

Errol Heights Park is a lovely space in SE Portland and a neighborhood favorite. The top portion of the park was recently developed and features play areas, a community garden, and picnic sites. The lower portion of the park, accessible via a unique metal ramp, features a wetland environment and is home to many native plants and wildlife, including birds and beavers.

Join PP&R horticulture staff keep up the natural garden beds around Woodlawn Park.

Parks staff have been working for many years to renovate Woodlawn Park by removing areas of invasive English Ivy and add native plants that support insects and wildlife. Natural garden beds now hug the park from all sides.

Work parties - weeding, mulching, pruning - are held (usually) every fourth Friday of the month to keep these areas healthy.

Join Portland Parks & Recreation, and Friends of Woods Park, for our monthly volunteer event at Woods Park. Volunteers will be maintaining the trails in the park . This is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. No experience needed. Tools, gloves, water, coffee, snacks and project instructions provided. About the Park

Pier Park is a beautiful park in North Portland with many amenities for park visitors. Home to many trees, there are little gems throughout the park, from small pollinator patches featuring pollinator-friendly and native plants to a fairy garden and the new home of the Belmont Goats!

PP&R has also worked in collaboration with the Friends of Pier Park for many years in supporting park stewardship efforts to sustain this special green space as a resource for neighbors, community, and wildlife for future generations. Portland Parks & Recreation offers a recreational volleyball league each fall and spring for youth in 3rd through 12th grades. Established teams and individual players are invited to register for PP&R's youth volleyball program, which provides players an opportunity to learn and practice fundamentals, develop teamwork, and participate in match play in a recreational environment. Players in 3rd grade through high school are eligible to participate, and all skill levels are welcome. Each season lasts six weeks. Practices are once a week, and games are played on Saturdays. 

Team registration for the spring 2026 co-ed volleyball season opens March 9 and closes April 10. Practices begin April 1, and games begin Saturday, April 11, and continue through May 9.  

Practice for Independent Players are Wednesday evenings, and the younger grades (3rd through 6th grades) meet from 6:00pm to 7:10pm, and the older grades (7th grade through high school) meet from 7:20pm to 8:30pm. Practice is held at Beverly Cleary School, which is located at 1915 NE 33rd Avenue in Portland.  A weekly game schedule is posted on this webpage each Thursday afternoon beginning April 9.

Team practice times are available through the PP&R Sports Office.  Contact Blaine Rethmeier (blaine.rethmeier@portlandoregon.gov) for practice times and gym permits.

Join PP&R and Forest Park Conservancy to help restore Marquam Nature Park. Volunteers will be hiking to the site and will be working on maintaining the trails in the park. Please dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes,  water and snacks. Tools, gloves, project instruction, snacks, hot drinks and hand warmers provided. This is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. 

Please bring your own water bottle, wear closed toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Instructions, tools, and gloves will be provided. For the safety of staff and other volunteers, please stay home if you are feeling sick.

Join PP&R and Forest Park Conservancy to help restore Forest Park Park. Volunteers will be hiking up to 2 miles from the meeting location. We will be working on maintaining the trails in the parks. This is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. 

Please bring your own water bottle, wear closed toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Instructions, tools, and gloves will be provided. For the safety of staff and other volunteers, please stay home if you are feeling sick.

Join PP&R horticulture staff to keep up the natural garden at Alberta Park

Created in 2017, Portland's flagship nature patch is the (pollinator) bomb.

Work parties to keep this beautiful garden healthy - weeding, mulching, pruning - are held most months. Please check in for specific dates as they're scheduled.

The nature patch is located in the center of Alberta Park.

On-street parking is available on 19th and 22nd Avenues. The park is accessible by Trimet bus.

Site Accessibility

Work areas are usually a short distance from a paved or gravel path. Most work is within soft-surface, mostly flat garden beds. Areas of work include mostly shaded and some-sun exposure.

Thank you for helping to keep Portland parks healthy and beautiful! Here are a few tips to get you ready for your stewardship event.

In order to ensure your comfort and safety, please remember to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes, long pants, a coat, sun hat, bring a water bottle, and be ready to get dirty! 

Work looks and feels different for every body. We encourage volunteers to go at their own pace and take breaks to rest.

Keep yourself and your community safe and healthy - please stay home if you are sick. There will always be more opportunities to volunteer with us!

All tools, gloves, and training to do the tasks are provided. 

While groups are welcome to join many of our regularly scheduled stewardship events, please contact the event coordinator listed in the description before arriving with a large group. This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work. We are also available to schedule special service events at your group's convenience during the week.

Fulfill court-ordered community service hours by helping to cleanup a park in a neighborhood near you. Locations, dates, and times vary and will be determined after a phone screening. We want to ensure your shift will work with your schedule and transit options.

Please arrive on time and ready to work at the start of your shift. Please bring a water bottle, wear close-toed shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather. Training and tools will be provided on-site.

Project Description:

Join Portland Parks & Recreation and Forest Park Conservancy to remove noxious weeds, plant native plants and other stewardship tasks in Marquam Nature Park. By removing noxious weeds, encouraging natural regeneration and planting a diversity of native plant species we help to enhance wildlife habitat, reduce erosion and limit water runoff. Are you enthusiastic about gardening? We are looking for volunteers to help tend the gardens at the Multnomah Arts Center. Gardening volunteers help keep outdoor spaces welcoming, beautiful, and well-tended for all who visit. This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the health and appearance of the grounds while supporting a vibrant community hub. This is a great role for someone who enjoys working with plants, being outdoors, and making a positive impact in the community!

These positions work independently and allow volunteers to work as their schedule and availability allows. PP&R will provide onsite training, ongoing support, and all supplies.
